16-year-old Rocky River HS student killed in Mint Hill crash, police say

FOX 46 Charlotte

A 16-year-old Rocky River High School student was killed in a serious multi-vehicle wreck Friday morning in Mint Hill, according to the Mint Hill Police Department.

The victim has been identified as Modesty Monaesia Shelton, 16, of Charlotte, police said.

The two-vehicle crash happened just before 7:00 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9 in the 12600 block of Lawyers Road near Bain School Road.

As officers arrived on scene, they saw two vehicles in the westbound lane that were stuck together.

Authorities discovered Shelton was still in the driver’s seat and was deceased. The driver of the other vehicle was conscious and alert and was able to get out of their vehicle on their own, police said. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution and has already been released, Mint Hill police said.

The initial investigation indicates that Shelton lost control of her vehicle and crossed the centerline and was struck in the passenger side by the other vehicle, that was properly in their lane of travel.

The investigation is still ongoing, but it appears speed was a factor, police said. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is assisting with the investigation.
