16-year-old wounded in Hidden Valley shooting

A shooting in Northeast Charlotte has left a 16-year-old fighting for her life.

It happened Sunday afternoon in broad daylight, and police still don't have a suspect.

People in the Hidden Valley Subdivision were apprehensive about talking to FOX 46, but those who did tell us shootings are a common occurrence there.

"We've tried to clean up the neighborhood,” said Star Jones, a Hidden Valley resident.

Jones has called Hidden Valley home for 45 years and she says there's one big difference between what the neighborhood was back then compared to what it is now.

"A lot more gunshots,” Jones said. “When I was little I couldn't remember gunshots. Maybe that was because of my youth. But now, it's on a nightly basis. It's like it's in my head; I can't even hear it sometimes."

Jones did, however, hear the gunshots that rang out Sunday in the 1600 block of Vancouver Dr.

"I heard it and I called 911,” she said.

One of jones' neighbors, who did not want to be identified on camera, witnessed the chaos as it was unfolding.

"Heard a car like rushing away and I looked down and saw the girl standing in the ciricle by the blue car and then she got in the car and they pulled off at a high rate of speed,” said Edna, a Hidden Valley resident.

It's unclear if the 16 year old shooting victim was in that car. Police say she sustained a bullet wound to the head and was transported to CMC in serious condition. Jones says she knows nothing about her or the other three people in the car with her at the time of the incident. But she does wish cases like this would stop happening in her own backyard.

"May God bless our neighborhood,” said Jones.

Police say they do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence, but, instead, possibly a drug deal gone bad.

Anyone with information related to the case is urged to call Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
