RALEIGH, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - Two men have been charged following the shooting of a Raleigh police officer Wednesday night, according to the Raleigh Police Department.
Cedric Jamal Kearney, 24, of Henderson, N.C., has been charged with attempted murder, assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm and robbery with a dangerous weapon. The other suspect, Antonio Dequan Fletcher, 21, from Cary, N.C., has been charged with possession of a stolen firearm.
WRAL reports arrest warrants have identified the officer as Charles Ainsworth. Officer Ainsworth, from Jacksonville, graduated from North Carolina State University, where he majored in psychology.
Authorities said Ainsworth was shot several times while trying to take a suspect into custody. Officer Ainsworth was hospitalized overnight and out of surgery early Thursday.
"The Raleigh Police Department is grateful for all of the support from the various law enforcement agencies, the surgeons and medical staff, and the community," the department said in a statement. "We ask that everyone continue to pray for the officer and his family."
Police said one suspect was taken into custody Wednesday night, while the other caught hours later after a manhunt that shut down a nearby highway and neighborhood.
