2-year-old left in freezing cold after man steals, police say

A two-year-old child was left out in the snow after a man allegedly stole an unattended car the child was in, then crashed it Thursday night.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, around 6:30 p.m. a woman left her two-year-old son in her running car while she went into the Super Wok restaurant at 2824 W. Sugar Creek Rd. to order food. When she came back outside, the car had been stolen by an unknown individual with the child still inside.

In addition to calling 911, the woman told friends in the area what happened. Her friends found the car nearby. It had been wrecked, apparently from driving over something.

The woman's friends saw the suspect walking away from the car and found that he had left the boy outside of the car in the snow. They chased the suspect down and held him until officers arrived and took him into custody.

The 2-year-old was not injured. The suspect has been arrested for kidnapping, hit and run, child endangerment, and auto theft.

DSS has been notified due to the fact that the child was left in the car unattended.
