44-year-old Iredell Co. man charged with raping family member

A Mooresville man is being held on a $500,000 secure bond in Iredell County, accused of raping a child who is a part of his family. 

The Iredell County Sheriff's Office said on Friday, Nov. 25 a report was filed regarding a victim who had been sexually assaulted between 2013 and 2016 by a family member. 

During the initial investigation, James Robert Tewell, 44, was charged with one count of statutory rape. 

The child was taken to the Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center where an interview was conducted. Several additional witnesses were identified and interviewed.

As a result of the investigation, Tewell was charged with an additional 34 counts of statutory rape, 35 counts of statutory sex offense, one count of rape of a child; adult offender, one count of sexual offense with a child; adult offender, five counts of second degree rape and five counts of second degree sexual offense.

Tewell, who was being held in the Iredell County Detention Center in lieu of a $100,000 secure bond, was served with the new charges and given an additional $500,000 secure bond.
