5 malnourished horses rescued in Rowan County

A Rowan County woman is facing numerous counts of animal cruelty after officials say they found five horses who were malnourished.

The woman lives on Deal Street in Landis County where she had the eight horses in her yard.

Teresa Burkett is facing five counts of animal cruelty, according to police.

Officials say they received a call about the horses. When they arrived at the house the sheriff's department reports there were two horses in the front yard who looked underfed and their bones were showing through their skin.

The homeowner told authorities she had been away for two weeks but someone was watching the horses. Authorities found six more horses in the backyard. Five of the eight appeared to be extremely underweight, according to authorities.

Neighbors say this has been going on for a while now. Burkett is being held on a $5,000 bond.

The horses were seized and taken to by animal control, according to police.
