7th grader runs across the street, gets hit by car in Gastonia

A 7th grader has been transported to the hospital after the child ran across the street and was struck by a vehicle Thursday morning, police said. 

The incident happened at 7:11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 11 on East Garrison Blvd. in Gastonia. 

Police said the student was not in the crosswalk and was running across the street when the accident occurred. The child was conscious at the scene, but had leg and head injuries. 

The driver of the car stopped to help the student, and was holding his hand at the scene. 

Police said the child was transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte with serious but non life-threatening injuries. 

Charges against the driver are not expected at this time, police said.
