8 inmates sent to hospital with overdose in Harnett County

LILLINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Authorities say eight inmates at a state prison in Harnett County have been taken to the hospital after overdosing on illegal drugs.

North Carolina Department of Public Safety spokesman Keith Acree told media outlets the inmates at the Harnett Correctional Institution appeared to get sick after using synthetic marijuana on Saturday.

Acree says four inmates were admitted to the hospital, three of the inmates remained in the emergency room Sunday being observed and one inmate was sent back to the prison.

Lillington Police say they are investigating the incident along with prison officials.

Harnett Correctional Institution is a medium security prison that can hold about 850 inmates.
