8,000 gallons of wastewater enters Union County creek

About 8,000 gallons of wastewater entered the Crooked Creek in Union County Tuesday morning, according to the Department of Public Works.

The sanitary sewer overflow occurred between 7:20 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. off Sardis Church Road near Indian Trail within the Union County sanitary sewer system on Tuesday, January 23.

Officials said the overflows were not of the magnitude to cause "immediate danger to human health or the environment."

Dept. of Public Works said the sewer overflows was the result of large amounts of heavy rain resulting in flooding, which caused storm water to enter the sanitary sewer system.

The overflow was reported to the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management.
