9-year-old shot in the chest while sleeping

A family awoke horror Tuesday morning after bullets blasted into their home on Caldwell St. in Statesville.

“My nine-year-old cousin asleep in bed and was shot in the chest,” says Jovan Miller who was also in the house at the time of the shooting. “It went in her chest and went out her arm.”

Miller says the little girl's father had a bullet lodged in his face and her uncle was hit in the ankle. A seven-year-old boy was also asleep in the house. Miller says he wasn’t shot.

“It's everyday broad daylight gunshots it's kind of like the norm to them now,” Miller said.

The 9-year-old is scheduled to have surgery on Wednesday, according to Miller.
Just hours before the shooting on Caldwell St., another round of gunfire hit a home about five miles away on Rita Ave. bullets riddled the windows of the home, lodged in the brick, and shattered the car windows.

“We heard ‘boom, boom, pow.’ My husband jumped up ran through the house, cut on the hallway light and that's when we realized we had gunshots all through the house,” said Sherika Barber who lives on Rita Ave.

The bullets just barely missed Sherika, her husband and their three-year-old son.

“I think it's ridiculous, it's scary, it really has been scary,” Sherika said.

Sherika's mom hasn't been able to sleep since she got the call.

“It has to stop, we all have to do something, because it may be someone else's granddaughter today, but it could have very well been my grandson last night,” Sherika’s mother said.

Family members are now wondering who would do this?

“I don't think nobody with common sense would shoot up a house knowing children could get hurt and possibly die, I don't think they're that heartless.”

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says they are searching for a person of interest in the Rita Ave. shooting and they are investigating to see if it is connected to the Caldwell St. shooting.
