Albemarle Police Department

A local man is being held on a $500,000 bond after he robbed and brutally attacked his mother this week, according to the Albemarle Police Department.

The robbery and assault happened sometime before 10 p.m. Monday, October 22.

Officers were called to the hospital Tuesday night in reference to an elderly woman who had been attacked. The woman told police that her son, Jamie William Hinson, 47, struck her in the head with the blunt end of an ax handle, knocked her to the ground, strangled her and threatened to take her life.

Hinson reportedly ended up forcing his mother into her vehicle and drove her to an ATM where he took money from her bank account and then drove to Rowan County where the vehicle ran out of gas.

Hinson's mother was able to leave, walking down the road while her son took off in a different direction. The woman was able to call someone to come pick her up and take her to the hospital.

Hinson is charged with felony robbery with a dangerous weapon, felony first-degree kidnapping, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, and felony identity theft.

His next court date is October 29, 2018.
