Alcohol believed a factor in crash that kills one, injures three

One person was killed in an overnight single-vehicle wreck in north Charlotte, police said.

The fatal crash happened at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9 in the 1200 block of Atando Avenue near Timeplanner Drive.

Upon arrival, police located a 1996 Buick just off the roadway. Medic arrived on scene and pronounced the driver dead on scene at 12:48 a.m.

One of the passengers, Brenda Jean Kearse, 54, was transported to Presbyterian hospital with seriou injuries. Two other passengers, Shakeela Monique, 25, and Jermaine Lamont Walls, 24, sustained minor injuries and were treated on scene.

CMPD said the Buick, driven by the victim, was traveling east on Atando Ave. and as the vehicle entered a curved section of the roadway, it began to travel off the road to the right striking a raised curb. After hitting the curb and traveling off the roadway, the Buick then struck a tree and overturned.

Speed does not appear to be a factor, however police said alcohol does appear to be a factor for the driver who was killed in this crash.

This crash remains under investigation.
