Alexander County woman still missing; boaters asked to 'be on the lookout for anything suspicious'

ALEXANDER COUNTY, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - The Alexander County Sheriff's Office is asking for the public's help this Fourth of July holiday with possibly locating a missing woman. 

Maria Calderon Martinez, 38, was last seen on June 14 at her home in the Sugar Loaf Community of Alexander County. On June 15, there was a fire at her house, where two bodies were located inside. The bodies have been identified as her children, with Martinez still missing.

Areli Aguirre Avilez, 30, is currently charged with murder in the death of Martinez and her children, 11-year-old Angel Pacheco and 12-year-old America Pacheco.

The sheriff's office believes Martinez's body was dumped in a body of water. Boaters that are on Lake Hickory, Lake Lookout, Catawba River, and any waterways surrounding Alexander County are asked to help "be on the lookout for anything suspicious located in the water."

Boaters are asked to call local authorities if anything is seen in the water.  

The sheriff's office is also asking the public's help with locating two men connected to this case. Both Juan Carlos Mendez-Pena and Luis Fernando Sanchez were last seen on June 14 in the Sugar Loaf Community of Alexander County. Mendez-Pena is known to operate a dark blue four-door 2009 Chevrolet Silverado. 

Mendez-Pena and Sanchez both are involved in construction work and have not been seen or had contact with friends or family since June 14, deputies said.
