Armed robbery suspects lead police on chase; 1 in custody, 1 sought

Two suspects led police on a chase through Charlotte after robbing someone at gunpoint, police say. It started in Steele Creek, and came to a wild end in uptown.

Around 6 p.m., police were called to the 6100 block of Cherrycrest Lane for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon.

"Mad cars everywhere it was crazy,” witness Nahum Tedros said.

A man told responding officers that he had been walking on the sidewalk when he was assaulted by two other men in an attempted armed robbery.

Shots were fired, but the victim wasn't hit. He received treatment for a non-life threatening head injury, and was taken to the hospital.

CMPD was able locate the suspect's vehicle and officers tried to stop them. The suspects refused to stop, and a vehicle pursuit began, starting on N. Graham Street.

"We just seen like a whole bunch of police swarming and then we were like ‘what’s going on? Should we be in or out?” said Paris Mith.

She says security guards kept her inside the Epicenter while this was happening, but she was never concerned for her safety.

"Just get out of the way, that's all you can do."

About 15 minutes after the pursuit began, the passenger got out of the car in the Reid Park neighborhood just off of West Blvd. He was caught immediately, and the chase ended just after 7 p.m. on Tryon Street near 4th Street.

That was when the driver of the car ran. Officers are continuing to look for him at this time.

"Another cop car tried to block him off, that [didn’t] work out. He did a little 360, hopped on the [express]way. From there, he was gone," said Tedros. "I saw the people in camo with guns and I was like ‘okay they are trying to find somebody,’"

The car the suspects ditched was reported stolen around 1 p.m. on April 12 from the 7-Eleven at 9608 University City Boulevard.

There were no vehicle crashes during this pursuit. Police are still searching for the suspect. Anyone with information on this incident can call Crimestoppers at 704-344-1600.
