Arrest made in deadly Newland Road shooting

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have made an arrest in a shooting that claimed the life of a woman and injured her husband Wednesday in north Charlotte.

Tomka Antonio McDowell, 50, was charged in the murder of Santa Acevedo and the attempted murder of her husband.

The couple were shot inside their home in the 1900 block of Newland Road, Acevedo was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Police said they arrested McDowell Friday without incident. He was taken into the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and charged with first degree murder, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and felon in possession of a firearm.'

McDowell has a lengthy criminal record dating back to at least 1986. Previous charges include, assault on a female, larceny, and others.
