Gastonia police are investigating after a 19-month-old was hit by a vehicle Wednesday morning.
The child is in critical condition at Levine Children's Hospital, according to police.
Officers were called out to Westbrook Circle at 10:41 a.m. in regards to the accident.
Police say the female toddler wandered out into the road while her mother was busy in the house. Police believe the possible suspect was driving a maroon Hyundai Elantra, hit the child and left the scene. Police say they found the driver a short distance away and have not yet filed charges.
The toddler was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center and then transferred to CMC.
Police are continuing to investigate.
Investigators tell Fox 46 the driver who hit the child will be charged, but they are waiting for updates on the child's condition before determining which charges will be filed.
They have not determined whether or not the child's mother will be charged.
