A body discovered in a patch of woods earlier this month in Indian Trail has been identified, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.

Nathaniel Townsend, 61, had been missing since October 15, 2016. He was officially put into the system as a missing person on October 24.

On November 2, his body was discovered near the intersection of Sunnyside Circle and Independence Drive, a quiet area wedged between a shopping plaza and a church.

The Sheriff's Office said Townsend was last seen by his wife near a Chick-fil-A in that area.

So far, no cause of death has been determined. Authorities said it doesn’t look like there was foul play involved.

The Sheriff's Office told FOX 46 Charlotte it appears Townsend's body had been in the woods for two to three weeks, which is consistent with his wife’s statement about when he went missing.

It could take the Medical Examiner 60 to 90 days to determine the cause of death.
