Caldwell County man arrested in fatal shooting, more charges possible

A Granite Falls man has been arrested after a fight let to a fatal shooting, according to the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department. 

On Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, deputies were called to 4233 Peachtree Place in Granite Falls after 56-year-old Douglas Alfred Coffey called saying that he had shot a man in his home.

The victim, Talmadge Gaston Coffey, 54, was found at the home suffering from a gunshot wound. He was airlifted to CMC for treatment. Talmadge later died from to the gunshot wound. 

Deputies say the incident was as a result of a physical altercation that occurred at the location prior to the call. Douglas was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. He was placed in the Caldwell County Detention Center under a $100,000.00 secured bond.

Following the death of Talmadge, the case is being reviewed by the 25th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and Douglas may receive further charges.
