CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46) - A young man is dead following a hit-and-run crash Sunday evening in east Charlotte, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
The incident happened at 6:13 p.m. Sunday, January 15 in the 7200 block of Lawyers Road.
Upon arrival, police found Corey Brown, 25, lying on the sidewalk. He was pronounced dead on scene by Medic.
"How could you just hit someone and just keep going," said Purcell Hayes.
Hayes was at a loss for words after losing his best friend of 17 years.
"When I moved to his neighborhood actually. That was one of the first people I met," said Purcell.
Brown was known by family and friends for his always positive attitude.
"He's a giving person, he's a loving person. He was never mad at anyone. You see his smile you would be like, 'Oh man I need that guy around around me.' His smile is perfect," said Purcell.
Evidence located at the scene indicated that Brown was struck by a vehicle and came to rest on the sidewalk after the crash.
The driver didn't stop, or even call 911. The sidewalk where brown's body was found, an area the 25-year-old knew well.
"Anyone that knew Corey knows that he walked it everyday. That was his neighborhood. He was comfortable with the neighborhood. That's where he grew up at. He loved the neighborhood," said Purcell.
Hundreds of drivers use that stretch of Lawyers Road everyday. Police are asking anyone who may have seen something to come forward. The driver who hit and killed Corey Brown is still on the road.
"Even if you didn't mean to hit him. It's just good karma to turn yourself in," said Purcell.
A GoFundMe account has been set up by Corey's father.
A candlelight vigil is planned for Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. near the hit and run scene on Lawyers Road.
