Catawba County homicide suspect in custody

Joseph Barker, who was wanted in a deadly shooting out of Catawba County, was taken into custody in Transylvania County, authorities said.

According to the Catawba County Sheriff's Office, Barker was found about 1:40 p.m. Thursday.

Deputies began their search for Barker after a woman was found fatally shot in the 4700 block of Plateau Road. Barker was last known to be in the area of Plateau Road driving a black 1999 Toyota Camry with North Carolina plate # CHX-2208.

Deputies said Barker's Toyota Camry was found wrecked along old Rosman Highway Wednesday morning. It's unclear whether the suspect ran away or left in another vehicle.

Transylvania County authorities were helping Catawba County in searching for the driver of a red, Chevy S-10 pickup that was seen traveling from the Old Rosman Highway area of Transylvania County toward Brevard around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Anyone with information on Barker's whereabouts or other information is asked to call the Catawba County Sheriff's Office at 828-464-5241 or 911. Barker should be considered armed and dangerous. Deputies say if spotted, do not approach him.
