The Center Theatre in Monroe is being resurrected for the first time since 1991.
The theatre was first built in 1939. It sits in the heart of Downtown Monroe.
"It has been the central part of Downtown Monroe for so many years but its been empty for so long," The Center Theatre Group's Nathan Hopper said.
Hopper and his business partner David Nelms took on the theatre project after the City of Monroe spent $250,000 to buy the building and lease it out to them.
Now the group is trying to raise $5-7 million to bring it back to live, and help revitalize Downtown Monroe.
A fundraising golf tournament has been planned to start things off for Oct. 12 at Monroe Country Club. Each participant must commit to fundraising a $1,000 minimum on his/her own.
There have been talks of providing free theatre memberships to some donors.
