CFD Class 1 rating could cut insurance rates

Charlotte Fire Department received a class 1 Public Protection Classification (PPC) rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO) which could cut insurance rates for property owners.

"This is an incredible achievement for the Charlotte Fire Department and for everyone living and working in Charlotte," said Chief Jon Hannan. "Out of 48,574 fire protection areas rated in the country, just 132 received the Class 1 rating. This means the Charlotte Fire Department ranks in the top two-tenths of one percent of all fire departments in the United States."

According to CFD, ISO's last assessment was in 1972 and CFD received a Class 3. ISO categorizes first districts using strict criteria to tell how well a fire department can handle residential and structure fires in the district.

Insurance premiums are based on the quality of service and fire protection available. CFD says the top rating means Charlotte property owners can get the lowest premium possible on that area of insurance.
