In the 2015 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, the Charlotte Hounds selected Will Haus out of Duke University. In the next round, they picked up Joey Sankey out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Now that their college seasons are over, the two former adversaries have come together to play for the Hounds.
"He drew great respect from our team, and from every team at the college level," Haus said. "He's definitely capable offensively, as well. So it's a huge asset for our team."
"He's a great player, a great teammate," Sankey said. "He's definitely capable offensively as well. So it's a huge asset for our team."
It's a quick turnaround for many MLL rookies. Haus and Sankey joined the Hounds shortly after their college teams were knocked out of this year's NCAA tournament.
"It's definitely weird," Sankey said. "One day you're on the field competing against the guys, and the next you're teammates with them. It's a fast transition. You're playing college lacrosse one week, and then you're in the MLL the next week."
Sankey's professional career got off to an impressive start. He was named MLL Rookie of the Week after his debut performance on May 23rd. Haus has the bragging rights from their collegiate days, having won back-to-back championships with Duke during his sophomore and junior seasons.
"I'll always look at myself as a Duke guy," Haus said. "I'm sure he'll always look at himself as a Carolina guy. But now that we're here with the Hounds, that can sort of be pushed to the side a little."
Haus and Sankey will look for their first win as professionals on Friday when they Hounds host the Ohio Machine.
