Charlotte, NC - Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools opened Monday with 89 teacher vacancies.
"We encourage our community to be aware [of school buses] and leave extra time," Superintendent Ann Clark said speaking to reporters Monday morning as she greeted bus drivers at the district's Orr Road bus yard.
147,000 students were expected Monday. Students in 89 classrooms across the district were met with substitute teachers Monday as the district looks to fill their remaining staff openings.
"We do have some of our best substitutes covering those classes," Clark said." We are determined to get that number to zero as soon as we can find outstanding candidates."
The district made the decision to welcome back its teacher assistants for at least the next two weeks. The employment of those individuals will be determined by the state budget, which has not yet been approved.
Clark said she was thankful the district was able to open Monday with less vacancies than last year.
