Charlotte's streetcar to start rolling Tuesday

The long awaited streetcar is set to begin rolling in Charlotte on Tuesday, July 14.

The Gold Line will stretch from Novant Health in Elizabeth to Time Warner Cable Arena.

The streetcar will be free to use, but the project cost $37 million to construct. Around $25 million of that final cost came from a grant, the other $12 million was funded by taxpayers.

Officials warn drivers that the streetcar only tops 16 MPH. The streetcar also cannot swerve out of the war of oncoming traffic and it takes 100 feet to come to a complete stop.

A second phase of the project will stretch the streetcar's path to Johnson C. Smith University. Construction on the second phase is set to begin in 2016.

An opening ceremony will happen Tuesday morning at the Time Warner Cable Arena. United States Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx will be in attendance.
