HARRISBURG, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A chemical leak forced people out of a business park in Harrisburg early Wednesday morning, authorities said.
The leak happened just after midnight Wednesday, November 1 at the Southeastern Packaging Company in Harrisburg. That leak is now under control, fire officials said.
Fire officials said the leak, that originated from a rail cart at the plant, put approximately 50 employees in danger. They were evacuated from the business Wednesday morning.
Highway 489 was temporarily shut down as firefighters and hazmat kept eye on homes and schools in the area. A 'shelter in place' was temporarily declared for ten to 15 homes, but no homeowners were ever directly affected.
About 27 firefighters and hazmat were able to stop the leak in just under an hour. A private company has now taken over the cleanup.
The cause of leak remains under investigation.
