CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A Gastonia man was shot in the stomach after a fight broke out during a card game, according to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.
Cleveland County Sheriff’s deputies responded to 207 Darth Maul Dr. in Grover around 5:30 a.m. on April 10.
Upon arrival, officers found Qunale Connealis Rondo, 27, with an apparent gunshot wound to the stomach. He was taken to the hospital by EMS workers where he underwent surgery for the non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
According to witnesses, several people were playing cards inside the home when a fight erupted between the victim and another card player, Raheim Huskey, 23, who had just recently arrived.
During the fight, Huskey pulled out a gun and shot Rondo in the stomach. He then fled the scene.
Deputies say robbery may have been the motive for the shooting, as an item was taken from Rondo during the incident.
According to Sheriff Alan Norman, Rondo was unwilling to name and help deputies locate Huskey.
“This is yet another example of an incident where the victim absolutely and completely refused to assist us in bringing to justice the person that shot him. Despite that, through investigative tenacity, my detectives have identified the shooter, charged him with several serious felony crimes, and are actively seeking him out,” Sheriff Norman said.
Huskey now faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, and robbery with a dangerous weapon from the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.
He was also arrested on April 4 by the Shelby Police Department on unrelated charges of possession of a stolen firearm, possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver cocaine and possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver marijuana.
“Mr. Huskey is an individual who is no stranger to the criminal justice system. I would like our citizens to contemplate why a victim would not assist us in every way possible when someone had just tried to kill him,” said Sheriff Norman.
This incident remains under investigation by Cleveland County Sheriff’s detectives.
Deputies are still searching for Huskey. Anyone with information about this incident, or his whereabouts is asked to contact Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office at 704-484-4822.
