CMPD: Homicide investigation underway in west Charlotte

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police are conducting a homicide investigation in Northwest Charlotte. 

On Friday, April 6, the body of 20-year-old Jacob Hernandez was found in the 100 block of Rhyne Station Rd. Hernandez had been reported missing by his family on April 5.

CMPD detectives say they had suspected foul play in Hernandez's disappearance based on information gathered during the initial missing person investigation.

A K-9 unit was used to search the wooded area off of Rhyne Station Rd. where Hernandez's body was found.

Initial information from the investigation indicates that Hernandez was shot in the 4200 block of South Blvd. and was transported by the suspect to the location where he was found.

Police say Jaime Joel Melendez Suarez, 18, is a suspect in the murder. 

Police obtained a warrant charging Suarez with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury Friday evening. The charges against Suarez have since been upgraded to murder. 

This is an ongoing, active investigation and officers are still searching for Suarez.
