CMPD is investigating after a woman was struck and killed by a car Sunday in the 2400 block of South Boulevard.

A preliminary investigation revealed 28-year-old Kelli Sue Putnam was walking southbound along the sidewalk on South Blvd when she stepped out in front of a 2014 AUDI S4  traveling southbound towards Remount Road. After impact Putnam was thrown up onto the vehicle and came to rest in the northbound lanes of South Blvd. The AUDI then went off the right side of the roadway and hit a utility pole.

Police say speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash.

Police arrested 30-year-old Gregory Alan Wheeling and charged him with Driving While Impaired and Aggravated Felony Death by Vehicle. Four other people were in the car with Wheeling at the time of the accident.

Wheeling has a $100,000 secured bond for the felony death by vehicle charge and the bond for a DWI is $1,000, according to the sheriff's office.

The crash is under investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department.

Wheeling's next court dates are January 27, for a bond hearing and February 8, for a probable cause hearing.
