CMPD on the hunt for suspects in 2 shootings in 3 days near UNCC

Students at UNCC are worried after two separate shootings near the campus within three days.

CMPD says no arrests have been made, but we are learning more information from authorities.

FOX46 has learned CMPD will be releasing surveillance photos to help identify one of the suspects in the latest shooting.

Police say 19-year-old Dejanae Gilliam was hospitalized after being shot in what police are calling a road rage shooting.

Authorities say the victim’s boyfriend had an argument with someone at a nearby gas station. That led to the road rage where Gilliam ended up getting shot.

The incident happened near an off-campus apartment complex at the 800 block of Pavilion Boulevard on Monday.

The victim drove herself to a nearby hospital to treat her gunshot wound.

CMPD is also actively investigating the shooting from Saturday near the campus where one person was shot.

Captain Brian Foley from CMPD says both shootings are not related and both happened off-campus.

“The only information we have that ties any of these incidents to the college is that one victim from an incident that occurred on Saturday who is enrolled as a student at UNCC,” he said.

We reached out to Gilliam, the road rage shooting victim, and she did not want to be interviewed. University officials confirmed she is not currently enrolled at UNCC.

Campus security says they have 52 university officers on campus at any time.

UNCC police chief Jeff Baker says they have a safety program in place called the Niner Choice Program to make sure apartment complexes are secure.

Baker says they rely on CMPD’s help to monitor off-campus apartment complexes since that’s out of their control.

CMPD is urging the public to come forward if they have any information.
