CMPD provides information on release process for body worn camera footage

As Charlotte Mecklenburg police prepare to decide on whether to release body camera footage of an officer shooting and killing of a man at Burger King, the department held a press conference today aimed at understanding their policy.

Officers are launching a new campaign to educate the public on its investigation procedures when one of its officers is involved in a shooting.

On Wednesday, they went over the methods and timing of the investigatory process.

“It is no longer up to the chief of police to release the body camera footage as of October 2016. The law changed so now it rests in the decision of superior court judge. Only a superior court judge can release that footage.”

CMPD has launched a website with all the information on the process. Click here to learn more.
