CMPD: Suspect identified in east Charlotte apartment hostage situation

Around 3 a.m. Friday morning Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers were called out to the Peppertree Apartment complex in east Charlotte for a shots fired called, but when they arrived they did not find a victim.

Family members inside the apartment called 911 and told first responders that a man related to them, Todd Cox, was inside the apartment and armed with a weapon was refusing to let them leave.

When officers arrived Cox barricaded himself inside of the apartment. 

SWAT was called in soon after in regards to the hostage situation. They were able to safely get the family out of the apartment. Occupants of the apartment complex were evacuated from the property as a precaution.

After a standoff Cox voluntarily surrendered to CMPD and was taken into custody, according to police.

Central Avenue has reopened.

CATS buses arrived at the apartments to assist with the occupants evacuated.

Charlotte Fire and EMS arrived on scene as well.

Cox has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon intent to kill and assault with a deadly weapon minor present.
