CMS brings in third party to investigate school bus fire

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School system has released a statement saying a third party is being brought in to help with the ongoing investigation into a Tuesday afternoon bus fire.

CMS says the third party investigator is from Thomas Built, the manufacturer of bus #188, which went up in flames while on Downs Rd. in Pineville. This type of bus is listed as CAT3126 Freightliner/Thomas Built.

The results of the investigation will be released as soon as they're available.

The results of the investigation into last month's bus fire has yielded inconclusive results. CMS says they still aren't sure of the exact cause of that fire.

“As a proactive measure, CMS is inspecting 250 school buses, activity buses and spare buses with similar engine types. These inspections are closely examining the wiring area of those buses, to determine if there is any indication of a failure," the school system says.

To provide further context on these efforts, CMS Transportation Services has provided clear instructions and guidance to CMS technicians to ensure a thorough mechanical check of the buses.

CMS says all 250 buses of type CAT3126 Freightliner/Thomas Built have been inspected according to these clear instructions, with no areas of concern found.
