Community gathers at Queens University to remember Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

39 chimes. That’s how many times the bell tower rang at  Queens University of Charlotte in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

He died at the age of 39 after being assassinated while visiting Memphis, TN. The chimes heard campus-wide were representative of the age that he was killed.

Wednesday marked the 50th anniversary of his passing.

The campus held a ceremony where they gathered at the bell tower and recited his speeches and writings aloud to the crowd.

Some in attendance said they showed up to display their appreciation to the civil rights activist and to also continue spreading his message.

“We’ve made so much progress, but progress will keep going,” one attendant said.
