CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Mecklenburg County lawmakers have sent Gov. Pat McCrory a letter asking him to scuttle toll lanes on a stretch of Interstate 77 north of Charlotte.

A group of 20 lawmakers and local leaders appeared at a news conference in Lake Norman on Friday, where State Sen. Jeff Tarte read the letter sent to McCrory.

Tarte and the lawmakers told McCrory that their opposition to the project stems from the recent discovery of new information like asphalt too weak to handle the projected truck traffic. The group said it is considering seeking a temporary restraining order to halt construction scheduled to begin on Monday.

The project calls for two toll lanes between the Brookshire Freeway and exit 28 in Cornelius, with more toll lanes between exits 28 and 36.
