A construction worker was seriously injured in a wreck on Interstate 85 south near the Mecklenburg-Gaston County line.

The crash happened about 6:10 a.m. Tuesday by the weigh station near mile marker 28, just before the Catawba River.

According to North Carolina State Highway Patrol, an F-250 with four occupants came up to the construction area without realizing there was construction. At the last minute, the driver realized the lane was closed and jerked his wheel to the right. Patrol said the truck was pulling a Sunbelt Rentals generator that jack-knifed. The generator struck the construction worker as well as a box truck, patrol said.

Officials said the construction crews had the correct signs, lights, and equipment.

The construction worker was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the F-250 was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Lanes were blocked for more than two hours on I-85 south. Traffic was backed-up for miles. All lanes have since reopened.

Highway Patrol said the driver was charged for driving with a revoked license, failure to reduce speed, and careless and reckless driving.
