Contractor rescued after falling down 40-foot shaft near NC/SC border

A contractor for Charlotte Water was rescued after falling down a 40-foot shaft in souther Mecklenburg County, officials said.

The accident happened on the site of the Clems Branch Pump Station Project, near the border of North Carolina and South Carolina.

According to Charlotte Water, the contractor was working when he fell down the shaft. Pleasant Valley Fire Department Chief Greg Nicholson said something fell in, which in turn broke his leg. 

A helicopter was called to the scene for transport, but couldn't respond due to the weather. Charlotte MEDIC ultimately transported the victim to a local hospital.

The rescue took about 45-50 minutes before the worker was freed from the hole. He was taken to the hospial with serious injuries, Medic said.
