Cornelius Police warn of 'big winner' phone scam

They may say you're the big winner, but you could end up losing a lot of money instead.

The Cornelius Police Department says it's seeing a jump in the number of complaints about this scam, particularly from elderly victims.

Here’s how it works: You get a phone call saying congratulations, you've won a big sweepstakes. Then, they ask you to pay either a fee or taxes directly to the company so you can claim your big prize.

Remember, it's illegal for a company to require you to pay a fee in order to claim your prize, and any taxes will either be deducted from your winnings or paid directly to the government.
