MOORESVILLE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - A volunteer was injured by a startled deer at the annual Lake Norman/Mooresville 5K Turkey Trot 5K on Thanksgiving, officials said.
The incident happened about 9:19 a.m. in downtown Mooresville.
According to Mooresville Fire Chief Curt Deaton, the volunteer was handing out water for the race when a deer in the woods nearby was spooked by runners. The deer tried to jump over the woman and kicked her in the head, he said.
The kickback was so powerful that the woman went head first into the street, Deaton told FOX 46. She was taken to Lake Norman Regional Hospital for treatment.
The woman's age and extent of her injuries were not yet released.
