Deputies: Indian Land man arrested after shooting girlfriend in neck with rifle

An Indian Land man has been arrested after shooting his girlfriend in the neck with a rifle, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called out to the 500 block of Silver Run road in Indian Land Saturday night around 10:30 p.m. in regards to a shooting.

Deputies found Russell Osborne and his 28-year-old girlfriend. Their 9-month old son was asleep in another room.

The woman had suffered a gunshot wound to her neck, according to deputies. Deputies performed  CPR on the female until EMS arrived.

The woman was flown to a medical facility for treatment. Police say she survived.

Osborne told deputies on the scene and investigators at the sheriff's office that he picked up his .22 caliber rifle thinking it was not loaded. He pulled the trigger and the rifle fired, hitting the woman.

Deputies say Osborne appeared to be under the influence and admitted to investigators that he had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana.

Osborne was charged with use of firearm while under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance Sunday morning.

A search warrant was obtained and a blood sample was drawn from Osborne. Test results are pending.

The investigation is continuing.
