Deputies: Man breaks into neighbor's home, starts fire

A couple was rocked out of their bed Sunday morning in Claremont after a neighbor broke into their home and started a fire while they were still inside, according to deputies.

The Catawba County Sheriff's Office said the man and woman had locked themselves in their bedroom at their home along Rock Barn Road and called 911.

The victims were able to esscape from the home through a window.

Eric Michael Deal, 38, of Claremont was taken into custody after deputies responded, along with the Catawba County Sheriff's Office Special Tactic and Response Team.

Deal faces two counts of attempted first-degree murder, one count of first-degree burglary, one count of first-degree arson, and two counts of first-degree kidnapping.

Deputies said the victims were not injured in the incident.
