Dowd YMCA Removes Confederate Monument

The Dowd YMCA in Charlotte is removing the Confederate monument from outside its building for two reasons: it's in the way for scheduled renovations, and because the YMCA wants to be inclusive of all of its members, and feels the confederate flag carries too many different meanings, and could offend some.

The monument has been at the YMCA since the mid 90's. The YMCA will give the monument to one of two Confederate soldier organizations in the area.

The YMCA was built in the 1960s, and is now one of the most diverse in the area. The Dowd YMCA is planning a $20 million renovation of the building. The renovations will push the building closer to Morehead street for more space, and includes a new parking deck.
