Driver charged in North Iredell High School awning collapse

The NC State Highway Patrol has charged the driver in an accident that happened on Saturday where a concrete canopy fell injuring 18 students from South Iredell High School.

Douglas Reedy Southers, 64, has been charged with unsafe movement violation as a result of the collision.

A Freightliner box truck was traveling west in the parking lot of North Iredell High School when it struck a concrete support beam which supported a concrete awning near the school's main entrance. The collision caused the awning to collapse, according to NCHP.

South Iredell students were unloading a bus for the band competition at North Iredell when the accident happened.

One female student had her leg amputated from the knee down.

On Monday both North Iredell High School and South Iredell High School held meetings for concerned parents.

Students have raised more than 20 thousand dollars to help the families involved.

Classmates are using the hashtag #BandStrong on social media to show their support.
