Driver charged in wreck that killed volunteer firefighter

State troopers are investigating a fatal wreck involving a motorcycle and pick up truck that killed a firefighter on Old Mocksville Road in Statesville Saturday afternoon.

Jackie Cheek, 51, a firefighter with the Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department, was driving a motorcycle on US 64 west when 46-year-old John Marlowe of Hickory was traveling east in a white dodge pickup truck.

Marlowe attempted to make a left turn on Swann Road but failed to yield and hit Cheek's motorcycle. The two vehicles collided at the intersection of US 64 and Swann Road.

Cheek died as a result of the collision. Marlowe is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to yield.

Officials with the Sheffield-Calahaln Volunteer Fire Department released a statement on Facebook about the passing of Cheek.

"It is with a very heavy heart that we send this out to you to let you know we lost one of own today. Jackie Cheeks was in a fatal head on collision this afternoon while riding his motorcycle. Please keep Lori, Brandon and their families in your prayers. We will update more as we know it."
