Driver of stolen car dies in crash on I-77

A man driving a stolen car was killed on I-77 today when he overcorrected near the Woodlawn Rd. exit causing the vehicle to crash.

According to Trooper Ray Pierce with the N.C. Highway Patrol, the stolen Mercedez Benz was traveling I-77 northbound at a high rate of speed around 11:20 am and decided at the last second to take the Woodlawn Rd. exit. This caused the car to spin out and hit a culvert, guardrail, and then a tree. When the vehicle struck the tree, the driver, Cameron Dequan Williams, 25, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead on scene by Medic.  He was not wearing a seatbelt.

There were two passengers in the vehicle who ran from the scene immediately after the crash. Troopers were able to obtain surveillance video from a nearby business that will help in identifying them. It is unknown if the passengers suffered any injuries.

According to Troopers, the Mercedez Benz was stolen from Kannapolis, NC.
