An 80-year-old Gastonia woman was the victim of a phone scam that cost her $5,000.

Gastonia Police say the victim filed a police report on November 4 indicating that she received a phone call earlier in the week from someone claiming to be with Publishers Clearinghouse. They told the victim that she was the winner of a cash prize but needed to make a cash deposit in order to pay the taxes that was owed on the winnings.

Police say the victim then made two deposits, one for $3,000, and another for $2,000, into a Wells Fargo bank account. The victim then realized afterwards that she had been scammed.

Detectives are investigating.
