An elderly woman was killed early Monday morning following a house fire in Lancaster County.

The fire happened at 9:20 a.m. Monday, Nov. 27 a residence along W. Welsh Street in Kershaw.

Bonnie F. Hilton, 83, perished in the fire, according to the Lancaster County Coroner's Office. Her body was found in the living room Monday morning.

It was so hot, it melted the shutters off the brick walls.

"The front windows were busted and flames and smoke were coming out of both windows."

The woman who lived here on West Welsh St. died in the fire. The Lancaster County fire marshal says the fire started in the living room, where they found her body.

Neighbors say Bonnie lived alone, but her children helped take care of her. A woman who works in the area saw the fire and called for help.

“A neighbor did call 911, reported smoke coming from the residence, we dispatched units and got on scene relatively quickly," said Russell Rogers.

The victim's friends say Bonnie was ill and used an oxygen tank. Neighbors also told FOX 46 she smoked. The cause of the fire, however, is still under investigation.

“We’ve called in South Carolina law enforcement to help us with an origin and cause investigation. We're conducting that at this time," Rogers said.

Sadly, this is the second deadly fire in Lancaster county this year.

“It’s definitely been an increase over years past."

Last year, a total of 77 people died from fire in South Carolina. With this deadly fire, we're now at 88 across the state.
