Fallen officers remembered during National Police Week

Every year officers who died on the job are remembered during National Police Week in Washington D.C.

Their names are engraved on a memorial wall at a candlelight vigil. Union County Sergeant Jeff Greene was remember this year.

Several local police officers from CMPD, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office, Davidson, Kannapolis, Huntersville, and Mooresville were at the vigil Wednesday night.

For almost the past decade, they have made the 500 mile bike ride from Charlotte to the Nation's Capital for National Police Week.

Police officers from Washington to Massachusetts joined this year including civilian riders.

Two CMPD Officer rode in their full uniform.

The annual bike ride started after CMPD officers, Jeff Shelton and Sean Clark were gunned down in 2007.

133 police officers died on duty last year, according to the officer down memorial page.

This year, 44 police officers have died on duty.
