CHARLOTTE, NC (FOX 46 WJZY) - The driver who struck and killed an alleged veteran and volunteer firefighter now faces multiple charges in connection to the southeast Charlotte crash, police said.
Grigory Vasil Kolesnik, 54, is charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and reckless driving.
The incident happened at 6:08 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30 in the 9800 block of Monroe Road, southeast of the Sardis Road North intersection.
Family of the victim tell FOX 46 Charlotte that Daniel Wheeler, 62, was on his way into work at McDonald's when he was hit. They said he was a volunteer firefighter in Waxhaw and a veteran.
CMPD said the preliminary investigation determined that a 2005 Nissan Quest, driven by Kolesnik, was traveling southeast in the left lane of Monroe Road. The pedestrian, Wheeler, was walking across Monroe Road and got struck in the roadway. Wheeler was crossing mid-block and not in a crosswalk.
After gathering information and evidence during the investigation, CMPD detectives determined that the driver of the Nissan, Kolesnik, had a vision obstruction due to an icy windshield, which contributed to the crash. Alcohol and speed are not contributing factors.
The accident blocked the left turn lane and left thru lane Monday morning in both directions.
CMPD was directing traffic into Sardis Village shopping center.
The crash remains under investigation.
