INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. (FOX 46 CHARLOTTE) - The father of a toddler who was found dead inside a home in Indian Trail Sunday is now facing murder charges.
Alden Whitehead, 30, was arrested and charged with murder and first degree child abuse in connection to the the death of 2-year-old Louis-Charles Chenier, according to the Union County Sheriff's Office.
“She was holding onto that baby there was nothing I could do,” said Jami Quick. “I wanted to do CPR but the baby was too far gone.” Quick and other neighbors rushed out of their home Sunday afternoon to help a mother screaming and clinging to her dead child. “To be so close and to see the child and to see the mom devastated, I have never been in a situation like this.”
Officers were called about 12:42 p.m. to the 5900 block of Sencoee Drive by the child's mother. She said she was picking up her son after he spent the weekend with his father. Investigators say the parents live separately and when she walked into a bedroom she saw her two-year-old son unconscious on the floor.
“I am praying for the mother of this two-year-old child and I’m also praying for the parents of this man who did this horrific thing to this child.”
A preliminary autopsy report shows the child died from blunt force trauma.
Now Quick is calling on the community to help ease some of the family’s pain.
“I want to just pray for this family and do something for this family it’s been devastating it’s been an eye opening experience for me and my family.”
